This fall concerns of our cemeteries being in poor condition were brought to the attention of our Select Board. The Board decided to create a Cemetery Committee. The roll given to the Cemetery Committee is to advise and make recommendations for regulations to the Select Board who are also the Cemetery Commissioners. The Select Board feels it would be in the best interest of everyone if we had regulations. Therefore, this is one of our committee’s priorities. We are planning a volunteer pruning day at each cemetery this spring. We will start with the New Boston Cemetery as this is where we have the Memorial Day Parade ceremony. If you can, please bring you clippers and join us. Members of the Council on Ageing (COA) will be bringing coffee and sandwiches. The dates will be posted at Town Hall Annex and on our web page. For FY 2016 we are requesting a budget line to start preserving these historic places before they deteriorate further.
We had our first meeting November 10, 2014. We then visited two cemeteries, Center and New Boston on November 16, 2014. We were very saddened to see how neglected and over grown some of the graves are especially at the New Boston Cemetery. We hope to return them to the well groomed park like look they once had. We plan to visit the other three cemeteries in the better weather.
